Chapter 23 Dog Lucky
Chapter 23 Dog Lucky
"There might be a lot of stuff..."
As Rod spoke, he took a package out of the basket.
"This is……?"
Just as Catherine was wondering,
As Rod opened the package, a large pile of grayish-green chunks of meat instantly "exploded" out, forming a small mountain on the old wooden counter.
The countless humanoid pointed ears, and that familiar fishy smell...
It's a goblin too?
Compared to the rotten chunks of flesh next to them, most of the left ears in front of them were intact.
The most numerous items were the ears of ordinary goblins, which were uniform in size and almost all of them were intact. Although they had been processed, the neat cuts still had a bit of fresh blood on them.
Next to it were five ears that were noticeably larger, with dark brown edges, a mark of elite goblins.
The most striking ear was thick and large, almost three or four times the size of an ordinary goblin's ear; it was the goblin leader's left ear.
Mixed in with them were dozens of tiny, pinkish-blue ears, about the size of a fingernail, resembling those of an infant, but upon closer inspection, they were found to be non-human.
"So many?!" Catherine exclaimed in surprise.
Seeing this, even though she was usually calm, her voice unconsciously became much louder, instantly attracting the curious gazes of those around her.
Immediately, a collective gasp filled the hall.
"hiss……"
"Holy crap..."
"How is that possible..."
"Did we just raid a goblin's lair?"
Rhodes remained unmoved by their reactions, simply looking at the stunned Catherine and asking, "Can we still redeem the bounty now?"
"Ah...ah, of course." Catherine picked up a pen and paper and began to quickly count the items.
"The left ears of ordinary goblins... one, two, three... forty-three in total... right?"
She looked up at the wandering knight in front of her, and only after he nodded did she put that part into the counter, and then continued to count the rest.
She took out a measuring ring and matched each of the ears, which were noticeably different in size from those of a normal goblin, to its corresponding size.
"Five elite goblins, one leader, and goblin cubs... twenty-seven in total. Do you see correctly?"
As Catherine said this, she couldn't help but swallow, feeling her mouth go dry.
That number is terrifying, especially with a bunch of goblin babies among them...
Goblins reproduce and grow quickly, and they usually don't go out to hunt until they reach adulthood, so it's rare to see their young outdoors.
This means that even if adventurers manage to wipe out a goblin squad, eliminating them completely is extremely difficult. Coupled with the low rewards, most people dare not venture deep into their intricate lair and have to give up.
Even if you manage to catch a few occasionally, it's impossible to catch so many at once.
This can only mean that the ranger in front of us destroyed an entire goblin lair...
Seeing Rhodes nod, she was about to calculate his reward when she saw him seem to remember something and reach into the basket to pull out a string of furs.
"And this," a bundle of wolf ears, mostly charred except for the edges which were still relatively intact, was piled heavily in front of the counter. "A few dire wolves that hunted with goblins, were they for bounty? They were burned."
"Yes, of course it counts," Catherine quickly replied.
Goblins, these cunning humanoid monsters, when they gather to a certain size and are ruled by a leader, will develop a symbiotic relationship with some other monster races.
The most common are low-level monsters like gray wolves and slimes.
"Forty-three ordinary goblins, each costing ninety copper coins, totaling thirty-eight silver coins and seventy copper coins."
"Five elite goblins, two silver coins each, ten silver coins in total."
"One goblin leader, ten silver coins."
"Twenty-seven cubs, fifty copper coins each, a total of thirteen silver coins and fifty copper coins."
"Six dire wolves plus several cubs' ears, totaling six silver coins."
"The total is... seventy-eight silver coins and twenty copper coins!"
She quickly began calculating in the register, the sound of her calculating the bounty exceptionally clear in the quiet hall, where everyone held their breath.
"Did you destroy a medium-sized goblin lair?" Catherine asked, opening her manual and consulting the relevant guild rules.
"Yes." Rhodes nodded.
"Then, based on your contribution in single-handedly eliminating the monster," Catherine took a deep breath and then spoke very quickly:
"You will be directly upgraded to a Level 1 Adventurer, permanently exempted from all guild business handling fees, and enjoy a 20% discount on all guild services and affiliated shops, as well as priority access to purchase and obtain inside information."
Upon hearing this terrifying level of authority, gasps of surprise echoed through the hall once again.
"hiss--"
"Is this a person?"
"I don't think so..."
Compared to the shock of the crowd, the bearded man lying on the ground being ignored was rather embarrassed.
Seeing that no one cared about him, he silently got up.
"Did you do all of this by yourself?" He looked at the young ranger before him and asked cautiously, "You took care of the entire goblin lair all by yourself?"
"No," Rod replied.
"Phew..." The bearded man immediately breathed a sigh of relief.
He knew it; how could such a young kid be so amazing?
He's probably with some big adventure group, just a gofer to collect bounties.
No wonder he was so clean; he probably didn't even lift a finger and was just the one who cleaned up the mess. He just came here to show off.
Many people showed expressions of understanding, and their previous awe faded considerably.
"I knew it! How could one person possibly destroy a goblin's lair?" said a tall, thin adventurer nearby.
"Last time I led a five-man team, and we lost one of our men before we barely managed to take down a small nest."
"That's right," another person chimed in, "There are at least dozens of goblins in the goblin lair, plus his leader and elite troops. How could one person possibly manage that?"
As everyone knows, goblins, though not powerful monsters, are notorious killers of novice adventurers.
They live in groups, are cunning and greedy, are good at ambushes, and often appear in groups.
Many novice adventurers are defeated by goblins on their first mission, suffering injuries or even death. Even experienced adventurers can easily suffer casualties if they make a mistake when facing them.
Not to mention that there was a leader and several elites among them, plus the dire wolves, which multiplied the difficulty of dealing with them.
Upon seeing this, Catherine couldn't help but sigh inwardly.
Although she knew that such a terrifying victory was most likely not the work of this ranger alone,
Looking at those ears, their freshness was consistent, which basically confirmed that they died at the same time and within three days. This was a world of difference from the opportunistic guy next to them who had stockpiled expired junk beforehand.
She had intended to use Rod's momentum to dampen the arrogance of the swindler next to her, but she didn't expect that her plan would still be exposed.
Seeing the surrounding adventurers discussing this, Catherine tried to smooth things over, saying, "In team battles, merits and bounties are distributed according to contribution, and level increases only apply to the main contributors..."
"What's the name of your adventure party? I'll put the total contribution into the party, and then you and your team will distribute it internally..."
Before she could finish speaking, Rhodes replied with some doubt, "No adventurer group."
"Huh?" Catherine was stunned, pointing hesitantly at the monster fragments on the table. "So you killed all of these?"
"I probably killed more than half of them?" Rhodes stroked his chin, recalling. "Most of them were responsible for delaying and attracting the monsters."
He wasn't wrong. Judging from the battle situation at the time, both Milan and his two companions, as well as the villagers, were genuinely drawing fire for him, allowing him to keep firing arrows from a distance.
"These should be the ones I made," he added, picking out the monster fragments without burn marks.
Catherine opened her mouth, but couldn't say a word for a long time.
She suddenly remembered that it was the same counter the morning before yesterday.
The ranger in front of me, dressed in cyan-gold leather armor, also had a nonchalant air about him, tossing a string of goblin left ears onto the counter.
He really enjoys hunting goblins...
For some reason, a sentence suddenly flashed through Catherine's mind, and then she realized that she had focused on the wrong thing.
In less than a day, this person destroyed a goblin breeding nest!
That's even scarier!
Catherine shook her head violently, shaking off those unrealistic thoughts, and asked instead.
"Hmm... So, the merits and bounties from these monsters all belong to you, is that right?"
"Yes." Rhodes nodded.
"That's enough," Catherine said with a gentle smile.
As long as the other party genuinely eliminated so many monsters, whether it was done by one person or a group, the Adventurers' Guild didn't really want to pursue the matter further.
Just then, the bearded man who had been lying on the ground suddenly sprang up and roared:
"Wait! There's definitely something wrong here!"
Seeing that Rhodes looked unfamiliar and had no companions, his eyes lit up and an idea immediately came to him:
"This kid isn't even covered in mud, how could he possibly have wiped out so many goblins? I bet he's just a shill sent by the Adventurers' Guild!"
"Everyone knows how troublesome monsters are, how difficult it is to peel off their skin intact or cut off their ears, but what about him?"
"I can easily pull out a bunch of complete materials that are above standard, and they are exactly the same as mine, all goblin left ears, and they are even better than what I worked so hard to get."
"Brothers, this is clearly a conspiracy! This is harming all of our interests!" the bearded man shouted, standing in the hall with his arms outstretched.
"He did this to tell us that we have to reach this level to get the full reward; if there's even the slightest deficiency or damage, the guild can deduct money from our pay!"
Upon hearing his words, the adventurers who had been watching the show unconsciously began to scrutinize and hostilely look at Rhodes.
After all, Rhodes looks too clean right now.
Compared to the bearded man covered in blood, his cyan-gold soft armor shone brightly, without a trace of blood or even ash, making him unlike any ordinary adventurer.
This glamorous appearance does indeed resemble that of a lucky shill from the Adventurers' Guild.
"Enough! Stop being unreasonable. Do you really think I can't see through these shoddy materials you bought from the black market?"
In response to the bearded man's baseless accusations, Catherine pointed to the pile of rotten meat on the table, slammed her hand on the table, and angrily shouted at the bearded man:
"These materials of yours are completely unusable. I wouldn't have accepted them if your wound wasn't still bleeding, and yet you're still causing trouble here!"
"Normally, an ordinary person would have died long ago from bleeding like this, and wouldn't have the energy to jump around like this," Rod said suddenly, looking at the bearded man's wounds.
"..."
Catherine was stunned, and so was the bearded man.
Seeing everyone looking at him, he instinctively covered the bandages on his arms and legs, which were still bleeding, and his eyes darted around, looking rather guilty.
"You brat, you dare ruin my plans? I'll tear your mouth off!"
Before anyone could react, the enraged bearded man launched a sneak attack, throwing a punch at Rhodes, intending to teach this ungrateful fellow a lesson.
Rod didn't even lift his eyelids.
He dodged the punch to the side, grabbed the other man's arm with his backhand, and kicked him hard in the unsteady lower body.
"ah--"
The bearded man crashed to the ground, his bandages quickly coming undone, revealing several bulging, tattered bags filled with chicken blood.
Fake,
It's all fake.
He didn't have a single injury on him.
The surrounding area erupted in uproarious laughter:
"Haha, so it was all an act!"
"If you can't compare to others' genuine skills, then you claim to be a shill—you're just a big fraud yourself!"
"Get out of here, stop embarrassing yourself!"
"This shill is trying to scam money, thinking nobody can tell, huh!"
The bearded man lay on the ground, wincing in pain. Hearing the mocking laughter, his face flushed red, but he dared not linger. He hurriedly got up, ripped off the remaining bandages, and ran out of the Adventurers' Guild.
They didn't even dare pick up the three rotten ears that had fallen to the ground.
The laughter continued for quite a while before gradually subsiding.
Catherine patted her chest, suppressing the anger she had just felt, and looked at Rhodes with eyes full of apology: "I'm so sorry, Lord Hiro, you must have found this amusing."
"It's alright," Rhodes said, handing over his adventurer's pass. "Can I redeem the bounty now?"
"Lord Hiro, please wait a moment!" Upon seeing the name on the sign, Catherine immediately stood up and called out to the backstage area, "Bring me a silver token for a second-tier adventurer!"
A rustling sound came from backstage, and soon a worker ran out, holding a brand new silver medal in his hand.
Catherine handed it to Rhodes with both hands: "Congratulations, Lord Hiro! From now on, you are a second-tier adventurer!"
Rod took the silver medal and weighed it in his hand.
It's much heavier than a bronze medal, and it looks worth a lot more.
Not bad.
He nodded in satisfaction and tucked the silver medal and the previous bronze medal into his pocket.
"Lord Hiro!" Catherine quickly called out to him, "You're a second-tier adventurer now. The guild has a few high-paying commissions that would suit you. Would you like to take a look?"
The surrounding adventurers also gathered around.
"Brother Hero, join our team! We're just missing a powerful ranged damage dealer like you!"
"Our team has a beautiful female thief who guarantees to serve you comfortably throughout the entire process!"
