Chapter 27 The Employee
Chapter 27 The Employee
The six-story old building had no elevator, so Sun Tiemei and Fatty followed Su Xiaohe quietly down to the fifth floor.
At the turn of the stairs on the fourth floor, Su Xiaohe gestured with her fingers and lowered her voice: "There are four people inside."
The fat man nodded, bent down and walked to the door of the room on the left on the fifth floor. Then he took a deep breath and kicked the door with a left front kick. The security door and the door frame flew into the room.
Sun Tiemei stepped into the house and waved her hands. Thick frost covered several windows. The fat man did not go in but blocked the doorway, making Su Xiaohe stand behind him.
Three people were frantically tidying up in the living room. One, wearing glasses, was trying to put a stack of sticky notes into the shredder, but it jammed, so he frantically tore them apart by hand. The other two were unplugging their laptops, but the cords were tangled in the table legs and they couldn't pull them out.
The moment the door broke, the three men panicked and tried to rush out, but the doorway was blocked by the fat man. Seeing the three men rushing over, he opened his arms, grabbed them all, and squeezed them hard. The three men immediately rolled their eyes and fell to the ground.
Two words popped into Su Xiaohe's mind: "forklift".
She patted the fat man on the back and pointed towards the balcony. The fat man understood immediately and rushed to the balcony.
There was a front-loading washing machine on the balcony. When the fat man pulled the last person out, Sun Tiemei recognized him at a glance. This was the person who had been tailing Fang Youli that day.
The four people held their heads and squatted in the living room, their movements very practiced.
Sun Tiemei glanced at the four people squatting on the ground. The fifth group's car could only seat a maximum of five people, and with these four cargoes, it simply wouldn't fit.
She asked the fat man to call Old Zhou in the equipment room to arrange for an escort vehicle. At this moment, a bespectacled man squatting on the ground offered to say that there was a Jinbei van downstairs that could seat seven people.
Sun Tiemei and the fat man escorted the four people onto the Jinbei van, while Su Xiaohe went to bring Chen Shi back to the station.
Su Xiaohe drives very fast, much faster than Fatty. Chen Shi had been waiting for quite a while when Sun Tiemei led the four people into the Fifth Group's office.
As soon as the four people came in, they saw Chen Shi sitting across the table. They exchanged glances, then walked to the sofa and squatted down beside it with their heads in their hands.
The fat man cracked his knuckles, and all four of them moved back simultaneously. Wang Jianlou lay down at Chen Shi's feet, his eyes slowly scanning from left to right. He stared at the man with glasses' trouser leg for a moment, then yawned, revealing all his canine teeth.
Chen Shi leaned his cane against the table, not in a hurry to ask questions. He first looked at the tops of the four people's heads.
The four people were four different colors. The one wearing glasses was grayish-white, indicating extreme anxiety. The short, stout one was pure gray, and his trembling legs showed how nervous he was. The other two had white hair on their heads and appeared relatively calm.
He spoke first to the short, chubby one. "It's the middle of the night, aren't you hungry?"
The short, stout man paused for a moment, then shook his head. Chen Shi took a box of cookies from the drawer and pushed it towards him. "Eat first, we'll talk after you've finished."
The fat man said fiercely, "Just eat what I tell you to eat, stop talking nonsense." The man with glasses had no choice but to reach out and take a piece, and the other three followed suit. The short, fat man took a bite, chewed a couple of times, and his shoulders slumped down noticeably by half an inch.
This was exactly what Chen Shi wanted. He waited until the short, stout man swallowed the biscuit before asking, "You still record things by hand? That's quite traditional."
"There's no other way, they only want handwritten notes, saying that handwritten notes are the safest," the short, fat man said, wiping the crumbs from the corner of his mouth.
"What's the name of the person you're talking about?"
The bespectacled man quickly answered, "I don't know, he and we communicate online."
"Can I see your chat history?"
The short, fat man hurriedly took out his phone and opened the chat interface.
Sun Tiemei glanced at it and was very disappointed. The other party said almost nothing, mostly just "I know" and "Okay."
The bespectacled man explained that this person was very mysterious; he would call them whenever he had something important to say, and he would use a different number each time.
Fatty and Su Xiaohe both shook their heads, but Chen Shi noticed that the other person's profile picture was a red bird that looked a bit like an eagle.
He took the phone, tapped on the other person's profile picture, and asked the fat man, "Brother Qiang, do you know what kind of bird this is?"
The fat man looked at it carefully for a while before saying, "It looks a bit like an eagle, but it's not. Eagles have light-colored eyes, so the one in this picture should be a falcon."
"This bird is quite strange, it's even red," Su Xiaohe remarked.
"Red Falcon!" Chen Shi cried out in a trembling voice.
The name "Red Falcon" is familiar to all five groups. When they arrested Lao Yuan, they knew that his superior's code name was Red Falcon. Is this a coincidence?
"He assigned a few of us to keep watch, and I was assigned to watch that old man surnamed Fang."
"I was originally assigned to keep watch, but then I heard he died, and that person never gave me a new assignment," a man wearing flip-flops chimed in.
"What was that person's name?"
"All I know is that his surname is Zhao."
Sun Tiemei flipped through Fang Youli's notebook, which contained very trivial information: what time they arrived at the park, which bench they sat on, who they played chess with, how long they played, and which route they took home. Their records were both very detailed and very precise.
"Do you know what these records are for?"
All four shook their heads. The man with glasses said, "I don't know. He gives us the money regularly and asks me to keep a record like this. Once, I didn't keep a detailed record and he scolded me."
"That's right, the other party has very high requirements," Flip-Flops added. "At first, I was also quite curious and wanted to ask him what he was recording these for, but he said not to ask if he didn't want to die."
Chen Shi leaned back in his chair, his mind replaying the cases that had occurred previously.
Assuming these four people's employer is Red Falcon, Lao Yuan's superior, and the drugs Lao Yuan possesses are prohibited superpower amplification drugs—things that can drastically amplify superpowers in a short period. Before Zhao Zhiqiang died, he yelled into the air, "They put something in my head!" Wang Demin, Zhou Yaping, and Fang Youli all said that the voice in the lottery station was soothing and addictive. The rows of instruments on the floor of the lottery station.
Zhuang Wen said that it emits sound waves of a specific frequency that can accurately match the brainwave frequency bands of low-level superpowered individuals.
Drugs, sound waves, and surveillance records—these three things seem unrelated when viewed separately, but now they all point to Red Falcon alone.
"Teacher Zhuang told me," Chen Shi said, looking at Sun Tiemei, "that the sound waves emitted by the equipment at the lottery station weren't just made randomly; different frequencies correspond to different emotions. If you could know a person's emotions in advance, you could use the corresponding frequency to influence them."
Sun Tiemei turned to a page in Fang Youli's notebook, which recorded Fang Youli's emotional reactions after each win or loss. "This is sample data. They are conducting a behavioral experiment. They use the patterns recorded by surveillance to send out sound waves, then use the sound waves to adjust a person's emotional state, and then continue surveillance to observe how much change occurs after the adjustment."
"What about Old Yuan's medicine? That stuff makes you go berserk, it's completely different from sound waves," the fat man suddenly asked.
Sun Tiemei closed the notebook in her hand: "Old Yuan's batch of drugs caused a dramatic increase in superpowers in a short period of time, which is indeed different from the sound waves at the lottery station. The drugs affect the superpowers themselves, while the sound waves affect emotions and behavior. Two methods, one goal."
Chen Shi didn't speak again. After Zhao Zhiqiang's death, he kept thinking about one question: why did Zhao Zhiqiang break down, while Wang Demin and the others just felt a little addicted?
Now the line is becoming clear: sound waves and drugs are different control groups in the same experiment. Someone is screening this batch of F-grade samples to determine which method is faster and more controllable, and who can withstand it and who cannot.
Zhao Zhiqiang was emotionally fragile, and the drug intervention was too intense, so he broke down first. Wang Demin and the others had just started using sound waves, and the dosage was still small; so far, they only had a slight dependence on sound waves.
Fang Youli always felt a "warm feeling" when he went to the lottery station. It was the sound waves adjusting his emotions; the dosage was low, and he only felt comfortable. But what would happen if the dosage were increased?
"These records must all be handed over to the intelligence section," Sun Tiemei decided. "I'll talk to Lao Zheng about it."
The fat man asked, "Boss, should we continue investigating this surveillance lead?"
"No need. The other party is very cautious. He will definitely replace them. It's pointless."
"What we need to figure out now is their testing methods, how many sound wave stations like lottery stations there are, the destination of Lao Yuan's batch of drugs, and which F-class drugs are already on their watch list. In addition, we need the help of other groups to do everything we can to capture this red falcon."
