Chapter 88, Team Leader, It's Targeting You
Chapter 88, Team Leader, It's Targeting You
After leaving Director Zhang's house, Chen Shi and Sun Tiemei went directly to the Supernatural Apartment Complex. That infamous, unlucky apartment was located on the far west side of the complex, on the top floor of that building—a rather secluded location.
Perhaps Director Zhang had informed the property management of the community in advance, because when the two arrived downstairs, the security guard was already waiting with the keys.
The moment the security guard opened the door, a strong musty smell hit him.
The house was completely empty, with all the furniture already removed. The floor was covered in a thick layer of dust and scattered with a lot of waste paper.
The house is still decorated in the style of the 1990s. The old-fashioned crystal chandelier is no longer usable. Large areas of the walls are yellowed and peeling, and there are bulges in many places. Overall, it looks old and dilapidated, with a strong sense of decay.
The security guard was deeply wary of this supposedly unlucky house and refused to step inside. He handed the key to Chen Shi.
"Gentlemen, I've opened the door for you. Please take your time looking around. Just put the key back in the security room when you're done, and I won't go in."
After saying this, he didn't want to stay a moment longer, turned around and quickly went downstairs, his attitude very firm.
Sun Tiemei stepped into the room, instinctively covering her mouth and nose. The space, sealed for years, was filled with foul air and a pungent musty smell, which was already suffocating. The air flowing in as she opened the door stirred up dust from the floor, making her feel even more uncomfortable.
She is used to working in all kinds of harsh field situations and has a tolerance level far exceeding that of ordinary police officers with superpowers, but she still feels uncomfortable at this moment.
In contrast, Chen Shi appeared completely at ease. He was relaxed, showing no signs of discomfort or unease. The cool air in the room enveloped him, making him feel refreshed. Even the anxiety he had felt over the past few days had inexplicably dissipated.
Chen Shi glanced around the room and casually asked, "Team leader, have you noticed anything amiss?"
"No strange phenomena have been detected yet, but the air quality is terrible, making people very uncomfortable. How are you?"
"Aside from being a bit dirty and old, there's nothing wrong with it. This place is pretty good." Chen Shi scratched his head, his tone relaxed.
Sun Tiemei was speechless upon hearing this. In the same environment, the two people's physical sensations were worlds apart.
The two walked side by side through the living room, inspecting each room one by one. The entire house was a standard old-fashioned house, with a plain layout and outdated decorations, looking completely unremarkable. However, Chen Shi became more and more satisfied with it; it was quiet and private, just the kind of atmosphere he liked.
But Sun Tiemei's expression gradually became serious as she slowly noticed the unusual situation in the room.
The buildings in this old apartment building aren't very tall, and the sound insulation is already poor, especially with the windows open for ventilation. You should be able to clearly hear the traffic noise from the street below. But... yet, stepping into this apartment, all the outside noise is completely shut out; the room is eerily quiet.
It's like there's an invisible barrier, completely silencing all external noise and sounds, and shutting the whole house off.
As the time they spent together increased, the differences between the two became more and more obvious and increasingly bizarre.
Chen Shi was still in excellent condition. He strolled around the room, feeling that it was quiet and peaceful, a hundred times more suitable for resting than the bustling office in the bureau. He felt cool all over and was exceptionally comfortable.
Sun Tiemei's discomfort was intensifying. Her thinking was slowing down, her usually strong concentration was becoming somewhat scattered, and her precise and keen perception was being quietly suppressed by an invisible force.
Although she didn't spend much time in the room, she felt tired and listless.
Before she could investigate the reason, an accident suddenly occurred.
Sun Tiemei was walking forward when, without warning, she tripped and stumbled forward.
Chen Shi reacted quickly and reached out to support her, preventing her from falling to the ground.
The floor was flat and clean, without any debris or bumps, yet she almost slipped and fell, which is quite absurd for an S-level boss.
After regaining her footing, Sun Tiemei frowned, feeling increasingly puzzled.
"Team leader, are you alright?" Chen Shi asked.
"Uncle Zhang is right, this house is indeed strange. If I'm not mistaken, there's an energy field inside," Sun Tiemei said solemnly.
To verify her judgment, she deliberately lingered in the room a few more minutes. Within those few minutes, a series of strange things began to happen. Her work ID, which she had kept safely in her pocket and hadn't even touched, inexplicably fell to the ground.
She turned on the room light, but it wouldn't turn on at all.
Chen Shi thought the light was broken, so he pressed it, and the lights in the room turned on instantly; it wasn't broken.
The two looked at each other in bewilderment.
The bad luck and accidents here are highly targeted. They target people with high-level abilities, constantly suppressing their state and creating accidents, but they are particularly friendly to Chen Shi, which is infuriating.
It's no wonder that all the colleagues who moved in before had accidents. Most of those who could get public housing were high-level superhumans, so none of them could escape the suppression of this apartment.
Chen Shi couldn't help but laugh: "No wonder no one dared to live here for four years. This house is practically a 'bad luck generator.' Others come in looking for bad luck, but I come in and nothing happens to me. Hehe!"
Sun Tiemei glared at him helplessly, then agreed with his statement.
"The General Administration and the Municipal Administration have conducted multiple on-site inspections, and all the instrument data were normal. Everyone thought the rumors were exaggerated. Now it seems that there is a special invisible field here, but the instruments cannot detect it."
She added, "Moreover, the field suppression is very targeted. I can't say exactly how, but I'll ask Zhuang Wen to come and take a look. However, the negative effects here are indeed ineffective against you."
Chen Shi was overjoyed: "So, does that mean this haunted house that everyone avoids has become my personal feng shui treasure? Team leader, do you think Uncle Zhang is deliberately making excuses to reserve this desirable house that nobody else wants for me?"
"You're overthinking it," Sun Tiemei retorted.
She glanced around the empty room, suppressing her weariness and surprise, and quickly weighed all the pros and cons. The strangeness of this house had been thoroughly investigated; there was no fatal danger, only a suppression of the luck of high-level ability users, but it was very friendly to Chen Shi.
This house is perfect for Chen Shi, who urgently needs a private and secure place to live.
"I suggest we wait for Zhuang Wen to come and take a look, and make sure there are really no problems before we move in."
"Huh? What did you say, team leader?"
Chen Shi was scrolling through his phone, looking for a housekeeper to clean the house, and he didn't hear what Sun Tiemei said.
"It's nothing." Sun Tiemei shook her head helplessly as she looked at his delighted expression.
However, she needed to figure out how this energy field was generated and whether there would be any drawbacks to living here long-term. Until she understood these things, her heart remained uneasy.
