Chapter 12 Speculation
Chapter 12 Speculation
"Oh?"
Xu Bin looked away and turned to look at Cao Dahua.
"Don't look at me! It wasn't my suggestion." Cao Dahua shrugged. "But since Wu Song wants to revisit the clues, I, as his master, will accompany him."
"Um!"
Xu Bin nodded.
That's exactly what he wanted to hear from Cao Dahua.
Wu Song was still in his probationary period and was not allowed to be armed, nor did he have independent law enforcement authority.
A criminal investigation team needs at least two people, one of whom must be a formally employed officer.
With Cao Dahua, Wu Song's master, investigating alongside him, there shouldn't be any problems.
"Then you and your master should keep an eye on this case. Actually, in my opinion, it's unlikely we'll find anything significant with the current leads. But since you could spot Wang Heng's problem at a glance, Xiao Song, give it a try. Try to take another look and catch the culprit. Good luck!"
"Um!"
Wu Song obtained the case files for the two scarecrow cases from Xu Bin and sat back down at his workstation to examine them carefully.
The first victim was Zhuang Zhengzhi, the head of the supply department.
He had already returned home when someone called him from a public phone not far from the steel factory's residential area. He told his family he had to go out for a while and then left with his umbrella.
He never returned, and his body was discovered the following day.
Because it was raining heavily that night, no traces were found at the scene where the body was dumped, and they couldn't even find out where the murderer committed the crime.
There were no signs of a struggle near the phone booth.
"Another possibility is that the deceased was no match for the murderer and was quickly knocked unconscious before being strangled in another location."
Furthermore, why could a simple phone call summon the deceased? Was it someone they knew? What exactly did the murderer say?
Wu Song took a notebook, wrote down his thoughts, and continued to flip through it.
The phone booth was a regular coin-operated phone; there was no way to trace anything from it.
After tracing the phone number, the Third Squadron took out all 28 coins inside and extracted their fingerprints. One of the coins was cleaned very well and had no fingerprints at all.
"The killer possesses extremely strong counter-surveillance and combat skills."
After writing another line, Wu Song frowned.
It feels like it was done by someone with some knowledge of criminal investigation.
Let's look at the results of the interviews with residents in the vicinity that night.
Because it was raining heavily, there weren't many people on the road, and no one saw any suspicious vehicles or pedestrians.
"The killer had a vehicle!"
Otherwise, a 200-pound corpse is not something an ordinary person could carry for very long.
A dead person is much harder to move than a living person.
The case file also indicates that the investigation is proceeding in this direction.
Based on the condition of the deceased's livor mortis, it was determined that bicycles and motorcycles could be ruled out.
"Like Wang Heng, did he hire a tricycle? Or a car? That murderer is very rich! But as the head of the supply department, Zhuang Zhengzhi represents a large steel plant with nearly 10,000 employees, such as the Gotham Steel Plant. It doesn't seem like a big deal for someone with connections to it to have a car."
"But if it's about cars, you're already so rich, it's understandable that you'd kill Zhuang Zhengzhi for profit. But why go to all that trouble to kill an ordinary security guard in the second case? Could there be such a huge profit involved?"
"Or perhaps, he simply couldn't stand their undermining of the steel mill's employees? That's why he killed them? And deliberately made a scarecrow to warn other dishonest people inside the steel mill?"
"But isn't it unnecessary to do this?"
Wu Song felt he definitely wouldn't do that.
Do whatever you want, as long as you don't mess with me, I definitely won't kill you.
There are so many things I can't stand; how can I possibly manage them all?
"So it was to provoke them? To provoke the police? That's why they put playing cards in the pockets of each victim, just to tell the police that he did it. But when provoking them, killing people with criminal records would reduce his guilt. He killed people from the steel mill both times because he knew best who in the steel mill was undermining them!"
"Do you know how many people were undermining the steel mill by the two dead men?" Wu Song asked his master, Cao Dahua.
"Many?" Cao Dahua laughed. "The head of the supply department at the steel mill, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone completely clean. And the gatekeeper, it's said, this deceased man had rather strong spending power; everyone knew he was quite wealthy."
"Not hiding it?"
"Well, he's not entirely without connections in the factory. My brother-in-law is the head of the personnel department. Besides, if you can't catch him in the act, can you really say his money is illicit? Can't he earn it by collecting recyclables after get off work?"
"All right!"
Wu Song continued reviewing the case files.
Zhuang Zhengzhi couldn't possibly keep a detailed record of how he operated, who gave him each sum of money, etc., so the investigation relied solely on testimonies from supply department employees and the people and companies that cooperated with the supply department.
Almost all of the people investigated had alibis for that night.
As for whether there are any remaining fugitives, that can't be found out so quickly.
Aside from the grudges and conflicts within this chain of interests, Zhuang Zhengzhi maintained a good reputation among his relatives and friends because he had money, and no one was found to have a motive for murder.
As for the gatekeeper Zhang Zhi, his colleagues confirmed that he had left the factory, gone home, and his family had not seen him return all night.
He had the accident on his way home.
After investigating social relationships, no problems were found.
By the time Wu Songzai had carefully read through the case file, it was already half an hour into his afternoon shift.
After putting the case file away and returning it to the archives, Wu Song found his master, Cao Dahua.
"Master, shall we go to the steel mill again?"
"Great! You have an idea?"
"I just feel that this murderer knows so much about the steel plant, so he must be an employee of the steel plant. In addition, he is quite skilled. I want to go to the steel plant's security department first."
"What's the security department's purpose? They don't seem to have any vested interests with these two, do they?"
"Perhaps it's for justice, to uphold righteousness?"
"For the sake of justice, to stop those two from undermining the steel mill, so you killed them?" Cao Dahua laughed. "I admit, that's a possibility, but it's really unlikely. No one with a brain would do that."
"That's hard to say! Didn't you notice that the wooden frame used to disguise the scarecrows was horizontal and vertical, and the arms of the two victims were tied horizontally to the frame, making it look like they were nailed to a cross? Maybe the murderer wanted them to atone for their sins."
"What about putting playing cards in your pocket?"
"Call them clowns? Aren't both the king and the king clowns?" Wu Song said, then shook his head. "I don't know either. Let's go to the steel mill first."
"Alright, go take a look. Let's try to find the real culprit as easily as we did with Wang Heng."
