After mentally preparing herself, Zhou Lijuan took out her phone and dialed Wang Guanxi's number.
Beep beep beep beep
No one answered.
She dialed it again.
Still no one answered.
Cheng Wanhua, standing to the side, grew anxious.
"Try sending a WeChat message, send a WeChat message."
Zhou Lijuan hesitated for a moment, then opened WeChat, found Wang Guanxi's profile picture, and typed a few words.
"Edison Chen, Mom wants to talk to you about something."
After sending the message, she stared at the screen, feeling particularly uneasy.
Less than a minute later, my phone vibrated.
Wang Guanxi replied with a single word.
"explain."
Zhou Lijuan stared at that word for several seconds.
In a word, it's cold and indifferent.
There were no "What's wrong with Mom?" or "What happened?", just a simple "Tell me."
It's like talking to a stranger.
Zhou Lijuan's eyes immediately reddened.
She knew that her son resented her.
I resent her for not keeping her promise, and for shirking responsibility for the factory.
But what could she do?
One is her husband and youngest son, and the other is her eldest son.
She was caught in the middle, caught between two opposing forces.
Zhou Lijuan wiped her eyes and forced herself to continue typing.
"Your Uncle Cheng's factory has run into some trouble. Could you help out? It's hard to explain over the phone, can we meet in person?"
After typing that line, she took a deep breath and pressed send.
Another minute passed.
My phone vibrated.
Wang Guanxi has returned.
"Come to my office tomorrow afternoon."
A location was then provided.
Zhou Lijuan checked the location and was stunned.
"Jiangcheng Guanxi Trading Co., Ltd."
The son started his own company?
She had never heard him say that.
Seeing that Zhou Lijuan's expression was off, Cheng Wanhua leaned closer and craned his neck to look at the phone screen.
"What did he say?"
Zhou Lijuan handed over the phone.
Cheng Wanhua looked at it for a few seconds, and then his eyes lit up.
"Edison Chen Trading Co., Ltd.? He opened a company? I knew it!"
He returned the phone to Zhou Lijuan, his voice rising several octaves.
"I knew your son would have money! Look, he still owns a company!"
Zhou Lijuan didn't say anything, put her phone away, and her expression was complicated.
Cheng Wanhua continued talking to himself.
"Go see him tomorrow afternoon and have a good talk with him. You don't need to borrow too much, just cover the workers' wages of about a million yuan first. Once his factory recovers, we'll pay him back with interest."
Zhou Lijuan glanced at him, wanting to say something, but in the end she just sighed.
"I'll give it a try."
Cheng Wanhua was overjoyed. He rubbed his hands together and then picked up his phone to look at the company address again.
"Jiangcheng Guanxi Trading Co., Ltd., what a grand name. Your son is quite capable, making money in Shanghai and coming back to start a company. Impressive!"
Zhou Lijuan felt very uncomfortable after hearing these words.
. . . . . .
Meanwhile, Chung Chao-lung had already arranged a meeting between Wang Guanxi and Tung Cheng-kang, the deputy director of the Commerce Bureau, for 2 p.m. today.
In fact, Dong Chenggang was even more anxious than Wang Guanxi, and he had long hoped that someone could take over the mess that was Jiangdong Garment Factory.
The county has seen a series of workers demanding unpaid wages, and the pressure from the city is almost overwhelming him. As the leader of the special task force, if this matter is not handled well, he will likely be the first to take the blame.
If you take the blame and get punished, it will be difficult to get promoted.
So when Chung Chao-lung said a boss was willing to take over, Tung Cheng-kang agreed without hesitation and immediately instructed his subordinates: "Quickly organize all the information about the Jiangdong Garment Factory, including remaining assets and details of unpaid wages for workers. Don't miss a single detail, the sooner the better!"
Two o'clock in the afternoon.
Wang Guanxi, accompanied by Xie Baizhi, drove a brand-new Cullinan straight to the Jiangcheng County Government compound.
As soon as I arrived at the door, I saw a middle-aged man in a suit and glasses waiting there with two other people.
He spotted Wang Guanxi's Cullinan at a glance, his eyes lit up, and he immediately knew that this boss was definitely capable and not just messing around.
He came forward and extended his hand.
"Hello, hello, are you Mr. Wang Guanxi? I'm from the Commerce Bureau, my surname is Zhou, Zhou Mingyuan. Director Dong asked me to pick you up."
"Hello, Section Chief Zhou." Wang Guanxi shook hands with him.
"Mr. Wang, this way please. Director Dong is waiting for you in the conference room on the third floor."
The five people walked into the office building. A row of propaganda posters hung on both sides of the corridor, with slogans such as "Never forget our original aspiration and keep our mission firmly in mind".
As Wang Guanxi walked and looked around, he suddenly said something.
"I've only been to the police station building before; this is my first time in the government compound."
Zhou Mingyuan paused for a moment, turned his head to look at him, and his mind raced.
This sounds like a casual remark, but upon closer examination, there's more to it than meets the eye.
He asked with a smile, "Does Mr. Wang have a relative who works at the police station?"
Wang Guanxi didn't hide anything and said it directly.
"Yes, my dad works at the development zone police station."
Zhou Mingyuan's mind raced, and he quickly asked, "Is your father perhaps Wang Jiming, the director?"
"Yes, you know him?"
Wang Guanxi raised an eyebrow, looking surprised.
The section chief was overjoyed, his face beaming with smiles, and his tone became even more respectful: "Let's get to know each other. Although we're not in the same system, we often coordinate things in the development zone. Director Wang has a very good reputation in the development zone; everyone says he's fair and honest."
Wang Guanxi smiled but didn't reply.
Zhou Mingyuan felt happy inside.
Wang Jiming's son, that makes things much easier.
As they spoke, everyone had already arrived at the conference room.
Dong Chenggang was already waiting in the conference room, holding a stack of documents. When he saw them come in, he immediately stood up to greet them.
Zhou Mingyuan quickly stepped forward and introduced them: "Director Dong, this is President Wang Guanxi."
"Mr. Wang, this is Director Dong Chenggang, the deputy director of our Bureau of Commerce and the leader of the special task force."
"Oh, Mr. Wang, welcome, welcome!"
After the introductions, Dong Chenggang reached out his hand even faster than Zhou Mingyuan, and shook hands with a strong, just-right amount of enthusiasm.
"Hello, Director Dong." Wang Guanxi shook hands with him.
"Sit down, sit down, don't stand."
Dong Chenggang gestured for Wang Guanxi to sit down, then glanced at Xie Baizhi and nodded, acknowledging her presence.
The six people sat down on either side of the conference table.
Cecilia Cheung sat next to Edison Wang, opened a folder containing a blank notebook and pen, and prepared to take notes.
Zhou Mingyuan whispered a few words in Dong Chenggang's ear.
Dong Chenggang's face didn't change much, but his eyes flickered.
Wang Jiming, Development Zone Police Station.
He remembered this incident and understood Wang Guanxi's implication.
After exchanging a few polite words, Dong Chenggang spoke first, smiling as he asked:
"Mr. Wang, you're so young yet so capable. Are you a local from Jiangcheng?"
"I must be a native of Jiangcheng." Wang Guanxi leaned back in his chair, looking relaxed. "I went out to make my way in the world for a few years, and now I'm back, thinking of investing in my hometown."
"Good! Good!" Dong Chenggang nodded repeatedly, his face full of approval. "Making money outside but not forgetting your hometown—that's what makes a good son or daughter of Jiangcheng!"
"Director Dong, you flatter me."
"It's not an overstatement, it's the truth." Dong Chenggang waved his hand. "A couple of days ago, I was reporting to Deputy County Head Liu, and he said that if Jiangcheng wants to develop, it needs young people like you who have seen the world and have capital to come back."
