Can Knowledge be Distributed? The Dynamics of Knowledge in Interdisciplinary Alliances

The DK project is one of the key DKRC projects and is funded by NSF under its Knowledge and Distributed Intelligence (KDI) initiative. This project explores knowledge processes in distributed, interdisciplinary teams. The teams we are looking at are the Application Technology (AT) teams associated with NCSA and the Alliance. Our research effort focuses on how members of six AT teams (cosmology, environmental hydrology, molecular biology, chemical engineering, nanomaterials and scientific instrumentation) exchange and create knowledge across disciplinary boundaries, and how technologies support these processes. This study adds to the understanding of fundamental knowledge processes in a leading-edge research and high-performance computing environment.
